Today we
are very lucky to be interviewing Anne Pfeffer, author of Girls Love Travis
Walker!
What
were you like at school?
Do I have to say? I’ll give you
a hint. My mother sewed all my dresses up until I was twelve, and I didn’t have
a clue that might be uncool! As a kid,I read a lot, which is why I still love
children’s books even now.
Were you good at English?
Yes. I knocked out all these
great term papers on people like Virginia Woolf and John Steinbeck. But I
didn’t do creative writing back when I was in school. Very little anyway. For me, the urge to write
stories came only about ten years ago.
What are your ambitions for
your writing career?
At the very least, I want to
enjoy writing and feel proud of the books I’ve written. If readers like my books, I’m thrilled, and
if lots and lots of people want to read them and like them, I’m extra-thrilled!
Which
writers inspire you?
Many, actually, but I’d have to
start with J.K. Rowling and Roald Dahl. Imagination, humor, story line, action,
suspense—these two had it all. If I’m having a slow writing day, I’ll pick up
The BFG or a Harry Potter book and read a few pages. That somehow puts my brain
in the right place so I can start writing again.
So, what have you written?

Walker, I’ve written two YA novels: Any Other Night and The Wedding Cake Girl.
How much research do you do?
A fair amount, usually. I love
doing research. One of the fun parts of writing Girls Love Travis Walker was
getting to research firefighting. It’s incredible—the training, skills, level
of fitness that firefighters have to have. (Meeting cute firefighters was an
added perk!)
When did you decide to become a
writer?
I drifted into it. At first, I
wanted to be the next Dr. Seuss, who I adore. I spent a couple of years trying
to write the next Horton Hatches the Egg, but was advised not to quit my day
job. Not many people can write verse the
way Dr. Seuss does!
Then I took a stab at YA and
immediately clicked with it. I just started writing and submitting stories and
then slowly learned about
writing—about story structure and character arcs and so forth. So I think my
writing’s been better with each book.
Why do you write?
I enjoy piecing together
stories that I love and hope people want to read. It’s like putting together a
giant jigsaw puzzle, all the while trying to make it engaging and funny and
beautiful. At least, that’s what you shoot for.
For the most part, I enjoy
reader reactions too. It’s so amazing to me to write a book and to hear from
someone that they loved it, it changed the way they look at things, it made
them cry. I like to think that my grandchildren and their kids will read my
books someday.
Do you work to an outline or
plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
I’m more of a “pantser” – I
just write along and things seem to work out. Nothing kills off ideas faster
for me more than outlining. But I do think a lot about the structure of my
book. I write chronologically and as I
get new ideas, I go back and weave the new parts in with the old material.
That’s partly so I don’t forget, and also because it helps me later on to have
a strong opening with all the pieces in place.
